TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
Florence Margaret Smith (1902-71), known as ‘Stevie’ from her resemblance to a jockey of that name, lived in Palmer’s Green from 1905. While working as secretary to a publisher during the 1930s, she wrote novels and her poems began to appear in periodicals. Smith never married and was preoccupied with death since her time in a TB sanatorium during her girlhood. Her verse is caustic and witty, epitomised by her most famous poem: ‘Not waving but drowning’. A stage play by Hugh Whitemore was filmed in 1978, with Glenda Jackson in the eponymous title role. |
